Democracy as power
The Power of Democracy is an experimental typographic publication created in response to the 2026 International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) student brief exploring the theme of “Power.” The project investigates the relationship between democracy and influence and public opinion through bold editorial layouts and expressive typographic systems.
The publication uses scale and contrast to try and make a composition to communicate themes of authority, persuasion and collective voice. Inspired by protest graphics the book combines oversized typography with minimal colour to create a visually confrontational and impactful reading experience.
This project was developed as both a conceptual and technical exploration of editorial typography focusing on hierarchy and visual communication. Through some experimental layout design the work aims to hopefully reflect the tension between individual voices and institutional power within democratic systems.
